Probably the best advice I could think of for you would be to make tonal form your primary concern for a few months.
That is if three dimensional illusion is one of your objectives. The best way to start that would be to eliminate colours and concentrate on tone. Then study how different colours respond to light and shadow in their own right, as individual colours.

Try taking a black and white photo of your work and judge it according to the form you are after.
